When i am stopped and not moving, the rpms on my car go up and down most of the time between 2000 and 1500. Sometimes it eventually goes down to 1000 but most of the time it stays at 2000 rpm's. It idles very weirdly. What could be the problem?

I also forgot to add that it is a 95 mustang, 180,000 miles on it. I drive it pretty hard.

Depending on the model car you have, you have either/both an Idle Air Control Valve problem, or Throttle Position Sensor problem. Also you could have a vacuum leak or hole in the many small to medium size vacuum hoses that controls the emissions of your car. I would look for leaks first its the cheapest rout. Be sure the engine isn't hot. Look for any hoses that have 90-45 degrees and feel under the bends. The hose will feel as though its degraded with oil. But understand I am going blind here, without at lest the Year/Make/and Model of your car.

I have a 1996 Old s Ciara with 80,000 miles and was well maintained before I bought it a few months ago. I just replaced the gas filter, put a new fuel pump in it and changed the plugs and wires. It still wants to lose power and doesn t want to start right and keep running.

its either ur fan or u should periodically check the engine temperature. a car may idle high when it overheats, in order to move the fan faster and cool off the engine. this usually happens with an old, underpowered car. ive had it happen 2 my 97 RAV4 3 times. just turn it off until it cools down, if in fact it overheats, and drive it gently.......no drag racing.

I had that happen on a grand cherokee. It was the idle air control valve. Some time you can just clean it, but it is best to just replace it.

take it to a mechanic and have them run a scan on it. Chances are you have a bad sensor somewhere.
