51 5/8" by 27 1/4" and they come standard and thick/deep, just like adult mattresses.
Be sure you find the crib you want, then after choose a mattress. Make sure the mattress fits the crib, no big gaps. It's easier to find a mattress to fit your crib then the other way around!
I would go to a store and practice raising and lowering the side of the crib, see if it feels sturdy, is it too loud when you raise or lower it? You have to do a hands on, then you can comparison shop online for the best price for a crib.
I put baby mattresses on the floor at babies r us, and layed down on them! I wanted to see what felt best to me. Get in there and really check it out.

If it is a new regular crib then you don't need to know the dimensions, as the matresses will all be the same size. If it was a custom made crib, or an antique crib, you'll need to measure it and get those dimensions, because you may have to purchase a custom matress.
If you go to a baby's-r-us or wal-mart or something, they will have several different options for matresses. They will all be the same size, but the brand and the way it's made may differ.

If you go to Wal-Mart, Target, or Babies R Us, they sell mattresses for cribs and I think they are all the same size. I'm not sure where you live, but Wal-Mart has a sale on crib mattresses right now. There is one for around $45. I'm not sure what brand it is or the quality, but I would think it would be worth looking into.
But as far as specific dimensions, I'm not sure of that.

there are companies who custom make mattresses. I have a mini crib that my mother was raised in, I was raised in, and my son who is now 4 months old was raised (well you know!) in. They will make it to your dimensions and since the crib I used rather than a bassinette was over 60 years old, it was important to have a new mattress that fit well. Inexpensive too!
