how old do i have to be to try out for american idol? i wanted to but i thought i was too young so i was wondering for future reference.

You must be at least 16 years old. If under 18, you will need parental signatures on your release forms along with yours, and a parent or guardian will need to accompany you to your auditions. Of course, auditions for next season won't come around until August or so :)
