Purchased a replacement thermostat by honewell, only allows 6 wires. My thermostat has 7.. Can this work?

The existing thermostat has 7 wires, I didn't check it before purchasing the new one. The instructions inside the honeywell thermostat says anything more than 6 and I need to call their tech support, well, after 25 minutes on hold, I thought I would try here first. Any thoughts?

short answer yes it will work
you will need a picture/wiring diagram of existing 7wires[extra groung wire]
what/where they go

when you look at the replacement you will see that 6 wires still represents 3 sensors

if you have a multi meter you can check the wires for a/c or dc volts shouldn't be any, then you can safely check resisitance
for the sensors

this way you'll find the six wires you need

if you gave me the model # of both units i may be able to
tell you the colors of the 6 wires you need

If you've got a newer heat pump, you might need a 2-stage thermostat; the old one won't work. Look up your heat pump model number on the manufacturer's website and check and see what thermostat it needs.
