You want to solve this like you would an equation; that is, you need to isolate the variable on one side. Since the only thing being done to the x in this equation is a multiplication by 2, you need to divide by 2.

2x < -14
2x/2 < -14/2
x < 7

The solution is x is all real numbers less than 7.

A trickier problem lies when you are multiplying the variable by a negative number. Then, when you divide, you have to flip the inequality symbol. For example:

Solve: -2x < 14

-2x < 14
-2x /2 > 14/-2
x > -7

However, you only do this step when you multiply/divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number.

Just treat it like a normal equation (but be careful when dividing by negatives, you need to flip the < or > to the other one if you do that.

So, 2x<-14

divide both sides by 2 and get

x<-7
