Sounds like I have a squirrel stuck in my office wall. It had been in the drop ceiling but must have fallen into the wall. He will surely die, will it stink or can I leave it there? Don't want to put a hole in my wall if I don't have to. Also, think it will be dead by morning? My staff will not be able to work if he keeps scratching like he is now.

I came back to my office with a hav-a-heart trap because I thought he was in the ceiling. Animal control is not coming out at 12:30 am for a squirrel. Making a hole for him to come out into the office at his leisure is not an option, he would wreck the place by morning.

Call animal control and ask them to get it out before it dies, because, yes, it will stink. Have a heart!

I would think that anything that was once alive and now dead will stink, especially when it gets warmer. There should be some sort of animal protection agency that you can call that will come out and get the squirrel out for you. Plus, its not hard to do patch work.

If it eventually dies, it will stink. But only for a less than a week. Because the maggots will get rid of it, then you'll have another problem. Lots of baby flies.
I gave a point to the answer that suggested you call animal control.

Poor little Baby, cut a hole for him,you can patch it the next day real easy! Tell them you just can't knowingly let it die and you not do anything!Put yourself in it's place!People think I'm crazy because if it looks like it needs help, and I can do something to help it,I will.Even if it's going to die anyway,at least it would have died a better death than it would have. And it'll only smell until it's all decomposed.Do whats right in your heart.I even pick bugs out of the pool, cuz I can't stand to see them drown!

Get the poor guy out. Cut a hole in the wall. Call the fire department or animal rescue and get him out for God's sake. Will he stink? Does a bear ____ in the woods. He will decay, right?

Yes it will stink bad. If at all possible I would try to locate it and punch a hole in the wall to allow it to get out. To fix the hole left behind they sell these cool round pathches at lowes. they have a sticky back to them. place it over the hole spackle around it and paint. No more hole.
