1 month ago I had a radical hysterectomy. I was finally taken off the foley cath after 3 long weeks...I passed "potty training" by only retaining 65mls, but now my problem is I am having urinary retention and I feel like I must strain and push to go at all. Will this get better or is this my new life?

Sounds to me like you have some Pelvic Floor Dysfunciton (PFD) going on. It is possible to get better.

You need to see a doctor and make sure PFD is all that is going on and possibly get some physical therapy to help you.

DO NOT STRAIN! Your making it worse by doing that.

If your retention is really bad try taking a warm bath before hand....stimulate the urethra by tapping on it a bit with tolet paper......do all you can to relax!!

This doesn't have to be your knew life if you learn what you need to do to help yourself heal better and go normally again.

If all else fails a muscle relaxant may help.

((hugs)) I hope you feel better soon!

Haven't had a hysterectomy but have had a troubled past with my kidneys and bladder(multiple stones, infections, large blood clot). After I went through a long bout with all of that I had lots of bladder problems(going too often, leakage, retention, hematuria) and I never thought they would get better. I took Detrol LA for a short while then stopped, then gradually many months later I returned to normal. Give it time, these are sensitive systems and are used a lot, don't worry too much just yet. Good luck!

any time you have a radical 'anything' you have to think of the alternatives...did they cut any of the bladder nerves when they were in taking out the uterus? if so, maybe urinary retention is you new hobby...
good luck

This will pass. It just takes time.
Meanwhile try all the old tricks:
put your hand in warm water
turn the faucet on
relax
let it go

Good luck
