I need to read a book and write a paper for my health class. An example that my teacher gave was Christopher Reeve's book about his injuries or a book about someones battle with cancer. It has to be a physical (not mental) illness. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's Not About the Bike, by Lance Armstrong. An inspiring story of his comeback from cancer. Not only did he survive, he emerged with a body and mindset that enabled him to win the Tour de France.

If you want a more intellectual read, try Susan Sontag's "Ilness as a Metaphor"

Fiction or non? Autobiography?

Fiction:
Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson (an excellent book, well written, an engaging story, and well researched, lots of details (not boring) to include in a book report)

Non-fiction:
Gilda Radner wrote a book called It's Always Something about her battle with ovarian cancer. She died in 1986.
The Helen Keller story, of course
Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott. The Little Women author spent time during the Civil War as a nurse. Fairly soon, she contracted a serious disease (typhoid?) for which the "cure" was large doses of mercury. The side effects nearly crippled her, and changed her for the rest of her life. She was also continually guilty that she could not help the war effort more.
