i've got a used paperback that i bought used from the campus bookstore. i've got no problem with buying used books, but i HATE those giant stickers they always put on the back cover, so i always peel them off. the problem is that it leaves sticky residue from the gigantic price sticker they always put on the used books. ive tried everything from wiping it down with a damp cloth, rubbing it on the carpet (it gets weird hair stuck in the glue) to using alcohol prep pads (just made it stickier). any ideas, short of dumping it straight into the water, on how to get the sticky stuff off of the back of my book? i've got a lot of sticky books that i want unstickified

Hi- If the book is like a college textbook, you can use a facecloth that has been slightly soaked in warm water. Just lay it over the sticker area, and lightly rub to get it off. Warm vinegar also works-same idea, use a facecloth, paper towel, napkin. You have to be careful with some books, as they cannot take the moisture. You could try just a regular eraser or that Mr. Clean white Sponge eraser....it works great on a variety of materials.

I buy lots of thrift store stuff and use Goo Gone from home improvement or grocery stores to get rid of the tags. They say rubbing alcohol works, and that vinegar dissolves glue. Of course, any of the recommended solutions may remove the glue but ruin the book.
You might try rubbing it gently with an emery board or pencil eraser.
'Sure wish someone would come up with a tag that sticks well enough so stores will use it, but that can be removed when you get the item home. It would also be great if those annoying plastic things that fasten tags to clothing became obsolete.

You could rub some petroleum jelly onto it. let sit for a couple of hours. Then wipe off with a clean cloth. Oil breaks down glue. Alternatively you could let the glue remain and just sprinkle it with baby powder. It will stick to the glue and the glue will not feel sticky anymore.
Another alternative is to decorate the books with your own design by gluing decorative paper on top.
one of these solutions should work for you.

There is a product available in the supermarket called Goo-Off or Goo-Remover and this has citrus in it which will remove the sticky residue - just use a soft cloth and wipe over gently - no need to scrub at it.

get a big piece of duct tape, put it on the affected area, and peel fast, but gently at the same time and it will usually take the sticky residue off! hope it works!
