South India is relatively safe. I guess being a lone raveller you should take all the necessary precautions, like don't walk alone at night and look for secure hotels. You're trip to SI will be really cool. Lots of history, art and culture and wonderful silks and incense. You can really savour the exotic and traditional India, far from the glitz, glamour and noise of Bombay or Delhi.
Keep in mind though, you're liable to be ripped off in SI with the same degree as the North.
Happy Travelling.
Recommended places.
Kanchipuram, Chidambaram, Madurai, Trichy, Ooty and Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu.
Trivandrum, Kochi and Ernakulam in Kerala.
Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore in Karnataka
Hyderabad and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

It is safe to visit India alone for a woman. Please do not be carried away by stray incidences. You can visit South India. Plenty of foreigners are moving around alone. Only thing is that you should be properly dressed and not exposing yourself physically. As someone has suggested, avoid moving around in the night alone in whichever place you are in. Someone has also suggested some important tourist places in Tamil Nadu. Please go to the following websites to obtain more information:

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation
Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation
Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation
Kerala Tourism Development Corporation

All the above have package tours and you will be safe with them.
Avoid April/May/June in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh as it would be scorching summer. The ideal period would be from November to March in the South India.

It is quite safe for women to travel in South India. However one has to be alert and take normal precautions to protect ones own self. To know the culture one should move in rural and semi urban places. Metropolis should be avoided. The culture displayed in Metropolis is with external influence. All most all Pilgrim centres like, Srisailam, Bhadrachalam, Mantralayam, Mahanandi, Amaravati in the State of Andhra Pradesh-
Srirangam, Tanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayuram, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Tiruchendur etc in Tamilnadu- Trivandrum, Guruvayur, Trissur, Ambalpuzha, Tiruvilla, VAikom, Ettumanoor etc in Kerala,- Udupiu, Dharmasthala, Sringeri, Sravanabelagola, Gokarnam etc in Karnataka are a fewe such important centres to be visited.

South India is quite safe. As far as attire is concerned it is not a problem, jeans/shorts and tees are fine. Must visit Kerala and take a overnight trip on a houseboat.

Trivandrum in Kerla state.
it is safe if you are careful. see what the locals wear , and wear that. most of interest is to mix with the locals. forget the sites.
enjoy the food. but only eat cooked food and drink only unopened bottled liquids. now go have fun.
