According to an appliance report: The most significant end uses were central air-conditioning and refrigerators. A big reason for this is that older equipment is generally less efficient, and we tend to not replace air-conditioners and refrigerators very often. Another variable would be where one lives and how often one needs to turn on their AC.

P.S. - Why the two thumbs down????

It does depend on where you live and how energy efficient your appliances are.
Being in the apartment rental business I know for a fact that old refrigerators are the worst. Air conditioners, clothes dryers then TVs.
This may come as a surprise but the use of non-energy efficient light bulbs rank way up there also. All the bulbs have been changed and the power consumption is drastically lower.
By the way, it costs more money to turn your television on than it does to leave it on.

The household appliances the use more electricity are the ones to produce heat as clothes dryers, irons, stoves, hair dryers, etc. The flow of electrons to heat this devices require a strong use of electricity to produce the heat we require and to keep at the degrees settled.
Appliances as refrigerator don't consume to much electricity, the a/c may can use a big deal of it, but less than the heating ones due it has to make a big effort to move the CO2 which is heavier than air to perform the colling process.

TV - Since you want an average per year you don't use AC but three months out of the year .clothes dryer twice per week some times only once and it is on a 220 line making it cost effective .
Refrigerator runs off and on year round I have energy miser on mine .So depends on how many people in the house, on how often the door is open .
If some one is home all day then the TV is usually on all day every day. And has a constant ac flow even turned off .

It could be any one of those, depending on the usage or lack thereof. Anyway, I made a habit of unplugging everything when not in use (or turning off the power on the Power strip where electronics are plugged) and my electric bill dropped drastically. Many people think that simply turning off an electronic is enough. However, there is a lot of energy still being used. The savings from unplugging amazed me! Don't unplug the refrigerator or freezer!

here in las vegas its air conditioning. television isnt really a huge drain, clothes dryer is heavy usage but it doesnt have to run much, fridge likely uses more than dryer if its on all the time and dryer only a couple of times a week. hotwater heater uses a lot too, if its electric.

clothes dryer
>>.25 per load x 20 load /month =7.65
you will not wash more than one load per day

air conditioner
>> 1.88 /day x 30 day = 56.4
depend on your weather, if you use it for 4 month,
56.4 x 4 =225

refrigerator
>> 0.37 x 30 day = 11.25
11.25 x 12 = 135

u will never going to turn it off

television
>> 0.02 /hr x 240 hrs = 6

people have misunderstand that they spend too may time on TV,
and one TV is just one TV

8 hrs a day x 30 = 240 hrs

Finally, air conditioner is the winner !!

Since most dryers are gas dryers and most AC units use a separate source line you are left with TVs and refrigerator. TVs get turned off. So you are left with refrigerator that looses energy when they are constantly opened.

With out energy efficiency information, year of item as well as usage. Deductive reasoning has to point to refrigerators.

Watt is a measure of consumption of energy.

OVEN!!!!!!!!

10,900 watts!! Please note I said OVEN (not stove)!

Dryer is next.
at 5,500 watts and actually ties with air conditioner usually.

The refridgerator I have draws at MOST 850 watts however, it can be lower than that when all of the motors in the freezer and refridgerator are cycling off!! When you hear those motors cut on --> then it is drawing 850 watts

Watching television is the MOST inefficient use of electricity as it destroys your mind and doesn't add much value.

your refrigerator, that is simple if you look at the list, out of all of those listed, the fridge is the only one that is running 24/7, your tv, dryer, and a/c my be plugged in and drawing current but it is not working and using electricity to do its job all of the time, only when you turn it on.
