Good question. This dates to the events in France in the l1700s leading up to the French Revolution. Prior to the Revolution, there was an intense debate in the French government concerning the need for reform. The reform group by chance was seated on the left side of the meeting hall at Versailles--and the more conservative groups on th eright. As a result of this, groups ssociated with conservative political positions became known as the "right" and more liberal ones as the "left." So when Communisim came along, it got tagged as a "leftist"group.
And if you want to get a conservative's dander up these days--just poiint out that the Founding Fathers and the framers of our own Constitution were just as much "leftists" as the Communists are! :)

Word Origins tells us the terms date back to pre-revolutionary France. In 1789, the French National Assembly was created as a parliamentary body to move control of issues, such as taxation, from the king to the citizenry.
Inside the chamber where the National Assembly met, members of the Third Estate sat on the left side and members of the First Estate sat on the right. The Third Estate consisted of revolutionaries, while the First Estate were nobles. Thus, the left wing of the room was more liberal, and the right wing was more conservative. In the next few years, the revolutionaries would take over and countless noble heads would roll, but that's another story.
Word Detective corroborates the idea that "left wing" and "right wing" date to the seating arrangements of the 1789 French National Assembly. The Mavens' Word of the Day also confirms the phrases' origin.
Word Wizard agrees on the origins of the terms and adds that they have a secondary layer of meanings. "Right" can also mean "correct," while the Latin term for "left" suggests "sinister" behavior. We suspect that those on the political right wing appreciate these connotations more than those on the left.

Because the commies have always been considered left of center in the political frame, far far left, the extreme right way out there is the fascist, like the Germans in WW2 the Germans murdered six million Jews, the commies murdered 50 million of his own people he didn't care what they were he was Joseph Stallin he was considered to be the biggest mass murderer ever! and still is to this day. even passing the likes of Hitler. for the number of the people he had slaughtered, yet the two were sworn enemies, and Hitler made a deal with stallin over Poland and broke it thats what got the Russians into the war they were our aliens in the war . thats why East Berlin became Russian Territory after the war.

Which communist party is a party, which services for people living in poverty? No one does that. They just can cheat people, , that is. Communist parties are not left parties, they are hypocritical parties.

What is really ironic is that those on the right prefer to let the left side of their brain rule while those on the left prefer to let the right side of their brain rule.

note Origins tells us the words date again to pre-inventive France. In 1789, the French nationwide assembly grow to be created as a parliamentary body to flow administration of subject matters, jointly with taxation, from the king to the citizenry. contained in the chamber the position the nationwide assembly met, contributors of the 0.33 resources sat on the left part and contributors of the first resources sat on the right. The 0.33 resources consisted of revolutionaries, at the same time as the first resources were nobles. to that end, the left wing of the room grow to be better liberal, and the right wing grow to be better conservative. contained in the subsequent few years, the revolutionaries ought to take over and infinite noble heads ought to roll, yet it truly is yet another tale. note Detective corroborates the concept "left wing" and "proper wing" date to the seating preparations of the 1789 French nationwide assembly. The professionals' note of the Day also confirms the words' starting place. note Wizard consents on the origins of the words and gives you that they have a secondary layer of meanings. "proper" may also mean "maximum ideas-blowing," at the same time as the Latin time period for "left" exhibits "sinister" habit. We suspect that those on the political proper wing take excitement in those connotations better than those on the left.
