An album is a vinyl disc that plays on a record player. The vinyl disc is usually about 12 inches in diameter although a "single" record is also made of vinyl but is only about 7" in diameter. Does anyone even have a record player any more? A CD is a digital recording on a disc that can be played on a CD player in most computers, in some DVD players, etc. It is about 6" in diameter. It is somewhat common to hear older people refer to CD's as albums. This is a general statement to describe an item (record, album, CD, cassette tape) as a piece of music.

I still use the words album or EP rather than CD. I guess that means I'm old! :) Music magazines/critics still call them albums too. And to answer someone else's question- I have a record player and records, though I haven't used it in years. Oh, and albums are still released on vinyl.

Album does not refer to a specific format. Album just refers to a release of a collection of songs. Cd's are a specific format. So are cassettes and records or vinyls.
