Defrafmenting with xp does not work, 74GB out of 120 GB free, only goes to 2% then holds.?

Tried defrag in Safe Mode, still does not defrag (2% only).
My computer is very slow , have Win XP.

Fred. do a SCANDISK with both error boxes

Here it is step by step:

1 Hit Start
2 Hit My Computer
3 At the "C" right click
4 Hit Properties
5 Hit Tools
Hit Error Checking...check BOTH boxes

When that is done you will be able to DEFRAG all the way

Disk cleanup and use third party defragger.
