The actual city limits of Pensacola is small. The population of Pensacola is only about 60,000. However, that is VERY MISLEADING. Many people live in the surrounding areas, but work in the city of Pensacola, and vice verse. Most of the named towns and communities around Pensacola are just suburbs of Pensacola. The population of Escambia County, which Pensacola is a part of, is about 296,000. There are also 2 large Naval bases in the Pensacola area. I'm not sure it the number of military personnel is figured into the population of Pensacola or not.

It has a small town "feel" about it. MOST of the locals are friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. I think of it as the "old original" Florida. It's not as built up, like Central and South Florida. Pensacola Beach is on a barrier island off the coast of the city of Pensacola. Development there has been limited because of the delicateness of the island. You can actually see the beach and the Gulf from the main road on Pensacola Beach in most areas.

The Pensacola area has most all the amenities of any larger city, ie: cultural events, festivals, a 2 yr. college, a 4 yr. college, 3 hospitals, a modern regional airport, etc.
