Why is the US system for tvs different from most countries? I found the right tv for the right price for my beach house in Rio but the system is different there; PAL. My brother says that problably the tvs from US will work there now because of free trade. They also say that it's best to buy there because even if you fix it to make it work, it wont be as good...What to do??? Thank you for all the answers...peace..

The TV would have to say it accepts a PAL signal in addtion to the American NTSC signal for it to work with PAL, free trade would have little to do with it. It would probably be easier to buy it there, you will have a much better selection since all TVs there will be designed to work with PAL.

I have the same problem when I go to Turkey. A card for a laptop that accepts PAL is my solution. Barring that, buy it there. Also, a lot easier than lugging it. Try Craig's list for Rio. someone may sell you one cheap.

they are different standards. that means everything in the US, like VCRs, dish, cable, puts out a signal like 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 and TVs here like that. in Europe, everything there puts out 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3 and the TVs there like that. chances are, things usually don't work in countries they weren't made to
