Have you checked craigslist? Or, what about a scratch n' dent store? You can get brand new appliances that usually only have minor cosmetic problems.

Depends on how old the refrigerator is, If there is ten to fifteen years on it, then replace it. The new ones are more energy efficient. The most common thing to go wrong is the heaters in the freezing compartment go bad. There are heating elements in the freezer to defrost the cooling coils, they are on a timer and come on once a day. If an element goes bad, the coils ice up and there is no air flow through them and no cooling. Some are relatively cheap (about $40) and others are high ($210). Some are easy to change ( 40 minutes) and others hard (about 3 hrs). If you assume labor costs at $150 it can be expensive. I am a do-it-yourself-er and have changed several. You can tell if that is the problem with yours by leaving the freezer door open and preferably with a fan blowing in it to melt off the coils, There will be a lot of water as the coils melt off and after it melts the refigerator will work again, but only for about a week until it ices up again. Good Luck with it.

For whatever reason you need a new fridge, and in this economic climate, you need to get the best deal possible.
Design does not only mean the looks of your refrigerator but also the storage sections it provides to you internally. You can check for the storage shelves and compartments it provides and compare them with your needs.
A lot of refrigerators today feature separate multi utility cabinets and sub divisions in the existing ones for more convenient storage. You can also choose from top freezer or bottom freezer compartment and even opt for a separate pull out door vegetable tray at the bottom.

You will find different size and capacity refrigerators to suit your requirements from a range of manufacturers.
I highly recommend you read the customer reviews and I am sure you will find the right refrigerator for your budget.

I buy them from appliance repair stores; they're older, but they've been serviced and come with a warranty. That means that they've got a full freon charge and should run at least as long as it takes the tenants to destroy the doors. You can get a real nice looking stainless one for under $300 some times.
If you do the stainless route, see if your dishwasher has a replacable front panel. For about $40 you can get a piece of stainless cut the same size as the panel and then you've got two stainless appliances.
