Remove the + ,then move the battery out to the edge of the tray . you'll have to hold it (or get help) there is just enough room with the battery positioned correctly to get a 10mm wrench in there. It just occurred to me ,you are try to do it from under the seat ,aren't you? On the bottom rear of the battery cover there is a 1/4 inch bolt with a nyloc nut that holds the battery cover strap on ,remove that nut and then the strap and cover. This will allow you to move the battery around to reach the terminals. If you still don't get it e- mail me.

The only problem with Ride on's answer is that anyone who knows about working on vehicles know that you should remove the NEGATIVE (-) terminal first, to avoid the battery to short if accidentally grounded.

Its a tight squeeze in there. The fit is just as tight on my 96 and 98 Sportys. My weapon of choice is a offset ratcheting box wrench. Craftsman makes a 45 degree reversing box wrench set(http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00943375000&cat=Hand+Tools%2C+General+Purpose&subcat=Wrenches) that works very well in several tight places on your bike. Good Luck!!

you may have to custom bend a wrench to fit. buy a cheap wrench at the dollar store and bend it to fit. tilt the battery as far as you can, then loosen the nut.
