Let x be the amount received by the youngest child.

Then the eldest received 3x
The middle received 14000+x

The total is 3x + (14000 + x) + x = 64000
5x + 14000 = 64000
5x = 50000
x = 10000
So the youngest child received 10,000, the middle received 14000+10000=24,000, and the eldest received 3(10000)=30,000.

let e = eldest m = middle and y = youngest.
An estate of 64,000 was left to 3 kids
e + m + y = 64000
The eldest recieved 3 times as much as the youngest
e = 3y
the middle child recieved 14,000 more than the youngest\
m = y + 14000

So we have
e + m + y = 64000
e = 3y
m = y + 14000

The easiest way would be substitution
Since e = 3y, and m = y + 14000 we can rewrite the first problem
e + m + y = 64000 becomes
3y + (y+14000) + y = 64000
5y + 14000 = 64000
subtract 14000 from both sides
5y = 64000 - 14000
5y = 50000
y = 50000/5
y = 10000
now look at the 2nd equation
e = 3y
e = 3(10000)
e = 30000
and now look at the first equation again
e + m + y = 64000
30000 + m + 10000 = 64000
40000 + m = 64000
m = 64000 - 40000
m = 24000

Answer: Eldest received 30000, Middle received 24000, and youngest received 10000

X = YOUNGEST SHARE
3X = ELDEST SHARE
X+14000 = MIDDLE SHARE

X+3X+X+14000=64000
5X = 50000
X = 10000
3X =30000
X+14000 = 24000
