my friends today were talking about "dumping" their exhaust on their trucks. they said it will make it louder and is cheap to install it. what exactly is it and what do you need to do this. i currently have a 97 z71 with a flowmaster super 40 cat-back. Dual in/dual out tips behind the tires...thanx

They call those cable operated "dumps", cutouts. Check with JC Whitney online.

Dumping the exhaust goes clear back to hotrods of the 50s.
It's done with a cable operated valve spliced into the exhaust.
When closed the exhaust flows through the muffler.
When the lever is pulled a cable opens the valve and the exhaust is dumped at the valve bypassing the muffler.
It will be very loud when open.

Some people do it to avoid paying for tail pipes and all it is is the exhaust stops under the vehicle usually right behind the muffler and points down! The making it louder part depends on what you like personally i like a full exhaust system like yours!With it dumped under the car it makes more of a open header sound .

A dump is where you cut off the exaust before the rear axle.

All you need is a Sawzall.
