Bill F is correct. Santana needs to keep doing what he's been doing for another 8-10 years before he becomes a viable HOF candidate.
He needs to stay relatively injury-free. He needs to make the All Star team on a consistent basis, and it will also help him if his teams are successful in the post-season, at least a few times.
Dwight Gooden is an excellent example of a player who had one foot in the HOF for the first 6-7 years of his career, and then fell apart.
But Santana is piling up some excellent credentials to this point. His two Cy Young awards were unanimous selections, and he'll turn only 28 next month.
He's well on his way, but again, he needs to keep a similar level of production up for another 8-10 years, at which time his career totals will begin to help his case.

Honestly, it's way too soon to tell. Remember guys like Doc Gooden, Fernando Valenzuela, Vida Blue? Just three of many outstanding pitchers who started their careers like sure fire hall of famers but for whatever reasons never developed and maintained the quality of pitching. All three had as much if not more talent than Santana. Ask the same question 10 years from now.

If his career ended today -- no way.
Dwight Gooden looked like a sure hall of famer his first 6 seasons and he is not in the hall of fame.
Santana may be the best pitcher in baseball, but need another 8-10 good years before he is a hall of famer

He is a very good pitcher. If he just does terrible the next 5 or 10 years with a 9.45 era and a 3-23 record is pretty much the only way he can miss it.

Has about another 7 to 10 years to go before his name should even be mentioned as a HOF caliber pitcher.
