I have had dreadlocks for almost four years now, and i want to get rid of them. I want them gone mainly for a better self image, so i dont carry sterotypes and so people dont think i am disgusting and dont bathe. Ive had them for too long and i am ready, i am just really attached. I understand there are self-help books on letting go out lost loves, but how about letting go of things in your everday life? I want something long and extensive that will really make me feel comfortable about letting go
and yes, i want them gone. I am ready for them to be gone.

If you want to get rid of your dreads, then you just have to shave them off. If you say you are ready for them to be gone then just go for it. I understand what you are saying about getting rid of a haircut like that. I had a mohawk for quite sometime, (it was actually a Tri-hawk.) I would constantly see people staring at me as if I was some ignorant, racist teenager. Trust me, you will feel much better once you finally get rid of them and people will look at your differently once they are gone.

Ah, I don't have dreadlocks, but i have long hair and I get the "dirty hippy/druggy" all the time, but if your so "ready for them to be gone" why are you asking us about it and do it? I don't think your that ready. Realize it's hair and if you cut it off and miss them you can grow them, change is and realize that. Sometimes you need change and change would be cutting them off.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why anyone would want dreadlocks! They are just NASTY looking!

Just think outside the box, and think of the liberation your going to feel once they are off.. a good way is to just set your mind to get in the car, go to a salon, and sit in that chair, and tell them to just shave your head off.. Don't rethink it, dont question yourself, and dont feel bad either.. just dont think! For that moment. And you'll see how liberating, and outside the box that is!! It's just hair, it will grow back. :) I'm sure you will look great! :)

The last guy is right. Shave your head, you are ready you said so yourself. It sounds like you are ready for a change so embrace it and just do it. Your hair is not who you are, it's just hair bro.

Pretend you are empathizing with a kid with cancer and shave your head for one of them. (But get a hat to keep your head warm...or a toupee)...
