Yes it really irks me too, I hate the way it's become cool to write and speak like a moron. It's only acceptable to shorten words like that when you're writing something with a character limit, like text messaging on your mobile phone, for example.

I hate it when people write things by taking tons of shortcuts. Like using 2 for to of luv for love. Is it really that much more effort to write things properly?

People speak for effect and slang is perfectly okay among friends. No harm done, though you might sound kind of stupid. The problem is that some people can't turn it off among adults, their teachers, their boss, and that works against them since they look, well, stupid. Not good.

It aggravates me, too. I also hate when people use "u" and "ya" instead of "you". And "2" instead of "to". Really, whenever people don't just type out the actual word, it bugs me.
