The universe is "the food", the self-feeding food. Why, because it enacts and sustains, and at any time develops to a certain point or level, all its forms of life "thru" all its forms of life, in sorts of indirect cannibalistic processes and apotheoses.

In fact we may dare say that that which triggers the universe's life is the universe's own light. But this light is only one ingredient in the all-encompassing dance of life. All the rough and blunt expressions of life and of food or forage have their foundation in chemical/physical/spiritual patterns whose secrets our science is ever struggling to grasp, and our religions ever struggling to impose definite explanations about.

So, the answer to your question may be that the universe is a food consisting of its own forage, ever feeding and ever eating itself, thru a process of indirect cannibalistic dynamism and apotheosis. This may also be why the human beings call it "uni-verse".
