Why do people get into college on sports abilties in this country when most countries don't allow it?

Why do people get into college on sports abilties in this country when most countries don't allow it?
I don't think this makes much sense I mean sports are just sports and the fact that we have sports scholarships here in this country is ridiculous! People who are jocks are generally arrogant pricks with no intelligence and they get into college for their athletic abilties! Let's take places that are culturally similar to us like any European country, England, Germany those countries do not have athletic scholarships. So why do we allow it in this country?

We judge people on whatever talent they have. Student athletes must maintain a suitable academic level of achievement or they will be dropped form the team. Their skill in athletics is not the only reason they get into college. Not everyone is "book' smart.
