Very ambitious. Time to build it depends your experience in boat building. If you have no experience, it'll take a while. Steam engines can be very dangerous if used improperly and beginners should avoid steam altogether. Start out with just one boat too.

Cass, to start, you need to put together a basic plan to achieve your goal. Write down the things you think you need to do it and then try to get those things in action.
You need to start.
You need to post this kind of question everywhere you can think of. Write a letter to the local paper, try to get them interested in your story. Share your vision and your passion and your reasons and tell the world what you want to do. Ask for help from those who can help. Ask for a steam technician to help with the motor. Ask for a metal expert and a welder to help with the structural design. Ask local suppliers to donate materials, time and labour to make the dream a reality. It will take time but you have time. Don't lose your focus. It's ok to take time off now and then but keep the focus on the result at the end and you will make it. The more people you have helping you, the less work each person has to do alone and thus the better chance you have of achieving success. Think how many people it takes to build one car for example. Think how fast they do it because there are so many helping out. You need to be the inspiration to the helpers you find and if you find you need another expert; ask for him/her wherever you can. Never let anyone tell you it can't be done because as long as YOU believe it can, you will work towards making it happen.
A perfect example of this sort of thing is the "Extreme home makeover show" on TV. Do you see what they can do in 1 week? Do you understand how they do it? Many hands and much passion.
Good Luck!

Learn all the math that you can. To build or understand the Keel Laying to Launch process takes a great deal of understanding in mathematical terms.
SS is the standard for Steam Ships and State Ships.
Q: What does "RMS", "HMHS", "HMS", and "SS" stand for?

A: "RMS" stands for royal mail ship or steamer (ships with this title have a room for transporting mail onboard). "HMHS" stands for His or Her Majesties Hospital Ship (This just ment that they were a British red cross ship). "HMS" stands for His or Her Majesties Ship (this was a title given to ships of the British Royal Navy). And "SS" stands for Steam Ship or Sailing Ship (although with modern cruise ships "SS" has come to mean other things like State Ship or Star Ship).

Do not name the boat before the keel is laid, or it is drawn up by a Naval Architect.
You can, sure, but I would not, call it Boat Aox and Ship Box,or something.
Go for your dreams, that way you have no regrets.well you will have regrets, but never regret your dream.
