the pay is hghly dependent on experience. the role is the liaison between business groups and Info technology group during software projects

A business analyst is mainly responsible for driving the requirements gathering and documentation of a product, processes and/or services. BA oversees testing and certification platform and criteria definition. The job entails interacting with customers, technology staff and the testing team to ensure the successful planning, development and deployment of the final solution in a timely manner. This individual is usually used during any technological and/or operational assessment, re-engineering or execution.

The title "business analyst' can refer to any number of positions depending on the organization. It all depends on the job description.
Usually, business analysts track and report on data outside of the normal accounting/financial analysis function. The exact nature of this depends again on the business, as does the salary.
When in doubt, read the job description. The title is too vague in and of itself to have much meaning.
