I was fitted with Mirena when it first came on the market. I must have been an exceptional case, because my experience with it was HORRIBLE.
The insertion was so painful I cried. The cramping and post insertion bleeding terrified me, and I nearly bled to death in childbirth!
The next five months were pure, unadulterated HELL. I had more bleed days than not, I became anemic, I was constantly cramping, sex was unbearable.
Finally I went to the hospital because I KNEW something wasn't right. Boy was I ever right...Not only did I have PID, but the IUD had punctured my uterus so severely I had to have it surgically removed. To this day, I have scar tissue that is so bad it can be clearly seen on ultrasounds, and is completely blocking my right fallopian tube.
I would rather be taken out and shot than be told I needed another IUD!
If I might make a suggestion, since you can take the pill, but forget it on occasion, why not give the Nuva Ring a try? I've heard great things about it and there's really nothing to remember except to change it/leave it out for a week for your period. Its another option.....

I got preganat on the pill so the IUD was ideal for me. I had no ill effects and used them for 16 yrs before having a hysterectomy. Not to mention the ones today last for like 5 yrs or maybe more by now what could be better........

I developed Pelvic Inflammatory Disease from an IUD. Don't know if that's rare or not but I'd check it out.
Also worked with a girl who got pregnant despite having an IUD. The baby was born okay but the darn thing was in there until she had it.

I had an IUD put in and loved it. I recently had it taken out because I had a cyst on my ovary but other than that it was great.

My sister had all kinds of problems with her IUD. The tissue grew around it,, making it very difficult to remove.
