Actually the first answer is completely false......sorry.....

The king cobra is actually the only snake in the world known to actually, not only build a nest for their eggs, but to stand guard until they hatch. This is the only species known to do this and it has been filmed before. No other snake on the planet will actually build a nest fro their eggs, and the king cobras construct it out of leaves and debris, it is really quite spectacular. Most other snakes will simply leave the eggs in a crevice or some out of the way place, but the mother king cobra waits with the eggs until they hatch, why they do this and how this behaviour evolved is still baffling to scientists...

Oh, an there are no snakes that eat their young....I don't know where he got that from!

Hope this helps!

In January, the male King Cobra starts to look for a mate. He tastes the air with his flickering tongue. Then, when he locates the female cobra, he will rub his chin along her body to calm her and to stimulate her for mating. After a month of mating the two snakes emerge from their hiding place. The female seeks out a secluded spot, she then excavates a shallow, circular depression in the

ground up to 3 in. in diameter. There she deposits 40-50 eggs and remains on or near the nest until they hatch in 70 -77 days. The female defends her nest site agressively. The male may also stay close by for a while to assist in defense. When the eggs hatch, the hatchlings are 12 to 25 inches long. Their venom, produces in small quantities, is just a powerful as an adults. As soon as all the young snakes have hatched, the female leaves them to look after themselves. Experts think she may leave to avoid the temptation of eating her own young.
A King Cobra female will lay eggs about once per year.

King Cobras are larger. Black Mambas are faster. But the Cobra is a snake eater, immune to most snake venoms. So it would most likely come out on top.

All egg laying snakes leave as soon as they lay their eggs. Some live bearing snakes stay around for a short while but are just as apt to eat their young !
