The first thing is to have a business that is need and wanted by the public, not just you. You may be the best person in the world at knitting, but if you're the only one in your community who knits, then there's not much chance of a knitting supply store surviving.
If you know your offering something the community wants and needs, then you need to look back at your business plan and look over the marketing part. Who's your customer and how do they find out about you?
Find a Small Business Development Center in your area. They're scattered all over and I've spent many, many hours in their office finding out how to write business plans, exploring marketing opportunities, and finding information I missed. And it's all FREE. Your tax dollars are paying for the SBDC's around the nation.

Be smart, do your research, offer a unique product, surround yourself with lots of smart people, customer service!!!, and last but not least....location, location, location. Remember, most small business fail, and it may take anywhere from 3-5 years to see a profit. You must really do your homework and weigh you options. Try a partnership, not so great in the long run but it's a smart financial decision in the beginning. Good Luck!
