You need to remove it from the startup registry. Here's how:

If the only program you want to stop running is AIM, you can do that through AIM Settings: "Settings, Sign In/Sign Out" Uncheck "Start AIM when windows starts."

If there are other programs you don't want to start:

Click: Start, Run, type in "msconfig" hit enter.

Go to the "Startup Tab."
Scroll down the list and uncheck any items you don't want to load at start up.
WARNING: Do NOT uncheck items in any of the other tabs. Do not uncheck items if you are unsure of what they are; doing so may cause your system to become unstable and/or have undesirable behavior.

i am guessing you probably have xp like most others. basically, you need to set up each application to not start when windows starts. the bad thing is that the way to turn them off is not all the same. for instance, to shut off my windows messenger from running at start up, i right click on the lower right corner where the clock is. drag to open, as window opens, click on tools, then options, then preferences, then i unclick run windows messenger at start up.

each of the programs you want to disable will be more or less the same. if you had windows 98, i could tell you a very ez way.

hope this helps
