Officially, it's not considered a planet anymore, although some people still consider it a planet for sentimental reasons.

When I was growing up back in the fifties and sixties Pluto was the furthur most planet. But it has become clear that Pluto is nothing more than the largest of the comets of the Kuiper Belt. In fact, there is a whole class of TNOs with similar orbitas which are called "Plutinos" - little Plutos - which, it seems, are similar to their big brother in all but their size. Many times in the past the status of Pluto has been questioned and now it is being questioned more insistently than ever. The proposal which is being debated is to downgrade Pluto from being the 9th planet, to being asteroid Number 10000. The rest of the TNOs would then be numbered from 10001.

Pluto itself is still real - I've seen pictures of it in Astronomy magazine. It used to be considered a planet until astronomers found larger bodies even farther away than Pluto. Instead of calling Pluto and the new bodies planets, astronomers voted to call them dwarf planets.

The reason Pluto has been demoted is that the term "planet" has been redefined as a non-stellar body in orbit around a star that has sufficient mass and therefore gravity that it is approximately spherical, and is able to sweep it's own orbit of debris. Pluto isn't big enough to do the latter.

Pluto was downgraded into the new term of dwarf Planet a while back. It is no longer a planet. If it kept it's planethood, they would have had to welcome 3 more planets into the solar system.
