It wouldn't matter how you described your favorite color to a blind person, because everyone's experience of the color is going to be different because of the inherent difference in our own perceptions of the colors themselves as a result of our rods and cones in our individual eyes.
Ask two people to describe the color of red on a Coca-Cola can(without referring to the Coca-Cola product) You're going to get a batter of different comparisons to other examples of reds, none of which are going to agree.
To explain a color to a blind person, you would have to work backwards from how they experienced the color. Then from that, maybe...MAYBE..you could build a baseline to describe how YOU experience the color. Then, they would only be able to truly interpret the color through your descriptions and it's highly unlikely that the color which they interpret would be the same as the color which you've experienced and made an effort to explain.

I would tell them something first off:
*I know you may feel disadvantaged because you are blind, and cannot see colors, but you have so many other advantages.
*You don't judge people by the way they look or dress
*You have more trust in people because your life IS trust
*You have other keen senses
*You are loved by so many other people
Then I would tell him that if he wants me to stop, or not describe colors at all, to just tell me to shut up.
if I was to describe blue, I would tell him of all the wonderous things out there that are blue. Like water at the beach, the sky on a clear day, and other stuff(my bedroom walls).
Then I would tell him about the color red and have him hold an apple and say things like
"Red is not just a color, but it's a feeling. Fire is red and it's hot and it is the color of love"
and all sorts of things
"probably too 'emotional' for guys", but hey... It was worth a shot!
Besides, I liked this question, it was caring and thoughtful, and DEFINATELY insightful. Thanks for posting it!

hmm.. that would be interesting to do. If you were me, I would do it by describing what the color would look in their mind. My favorite color is red, so I would bring in how my favorite color represents so many things. "Some people relate to red like the devil. Some relate it to love, or cupid. Our blood is red." Then I would describe ho the color makes me feel. there is a reason why it's your favorite color, and it is.. how it makes you feel. Does it make you feel content, excited, special, attractive, sad, alive? Your favorite color reflects who you are inside, so even though they will never be able to register color, they will be able to relate how that color makes you feel. They may even end up with a favorite color, even though they've never seen it, just because that color represent how they see him/herself.

Try to stay calm all the times and think: what is red - color of passion
what is gray : color of sadness and sorrow
what is blue: that is peace - the ocean and the sky
when You are in the hug of the mother nature and the sun is shining all over You - that is color green around You and yellow above. Etc.

it sounds hard to describe colors to a blind person since colors fall under the category of seeing is believing.

I would describe the color as best as I could. I would try to think of other sensory input that makes me think of that color and use that to explain. For me at least, yellow would be like the smell of lemons, the taste of fresh pineapple and the warm feel of sunshine on my face.

Your friend can't see. But he can hear, taste, smell and touch. Tell him, that as in the other 4 senses, people who are not blind can see colors, and among them, their favorite one.

I have had the opportunity to work with the vision impaired and was asked to describe different thing from my visual stand point ....
White would be like the texture of cotton...billowy and soft
Blue would be like ice or degrees of cold....
Red would be HOT...
and so on maybe you can draw some descriptions from you own experiences and expand on this cuz everyone's perception of things is different....
Good luck...
