Arm and Hammer Baking Soda!!!!!!!!!!!

baking soda + vinegar. After that, boiling water.

I would do the following things:

First I would check the circuit breaker/fuse that the disposal is on. If it is blown, have someone replace it. The breaker shouldn't be more than $5US. Make sure an electrician does it.

If it's not the breaker. There is a reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Press the button to see if that will get it to work. If it doesn't work when you flip the switch on, but you hear a humming sound then your disposal is jammed.

Home Depot has a "wrench" for garbage disposals that runs about $6. You put the wrench in the slot on the underside of the disposal and turn it from left to right until it moves freely. You have unjammed the disposal and it should work.

If the disposal doesn't hum, it's time for a new disposal. They have ISE brand disposals for about $70.

Hope that helps.

The peels of certain citrus fruits can creat a clean and fresh smell; I use a few orange or lemon peels and tear them up into about 1-2 in. size pieces. I turn on the hot water first, then run the disposal, and then turn off disposal again to put in the peels, and then run the disposal a final time. Also, there are a few places like Linen and Things that have these little scent balls you throw in the disposal that create a fresh smell as well, but this can be a bit pricey. Also, you might try baking soda, although I have found citrus peels to be about as effective as anything else.

This will work even if you can't turn it on.
Put about 1 cup baking soda in the disposal .
Next pour 1 cup vinegar in the disposal, it will bubble and looks like smoke but its ok.
Pour about a gallon of boiling water in the disposal.
Now since its broke and you can not run the disposal ,flush with warm water for about 1 minute.
Also if you have a black rubber flap(for lack of a better word) at the top of the drain hole. Take a wet sponge with baking soda and wash it. Yes this means putting your hand in the disposal, i know you say it hasn't worked in 3 years. Please make sure the power is turned off at the breaker(fuse box).

You could try and disinfect it. There are some great smelling ones on the market these days. Other than that I suggest you throw it away and buy a new one as it could be a Health Hazard. As a rule I wipe mine out every day when I remove the liner to replace with a fresh one.

Duh me, I just realise what I have written and it's for a rubbish bin. Must be losing my memory with age.

The best is lemon or throw some disinfectant down and just let it sit. I do this.

Ouch sounds like it might desire to be the A/C. have you ever checked around your outdoors unit for lifeless animals or foul smelling weeds growing to be around it? If this is all sparkling then i might actual call to have it inspected. it might desire to be some thing uncomplicated that's no longer severe priced to repair. I stay in FL and we had a rat infestation in our attic after the hurricanes a pair of years in the past and all of us started noticing a cool scent interior the eating area and it grew to become out the rats have been nesting there (interior the attic above) and urinating in each single place. The A/C unfold the scent whilst it cut back on. I doubt it is rust interior the rest room tank, yet you could empty it and sparkling it with some thing like CLR; somewhat if it smells worse interior the bathing room.

If it is broken, putting something in it to make it smell better isn't going to help. If you put lemon slices in it, they would just sit there and rot making it smell even worse. Could pour vinegar into it, this will drain out. Your best option is to remove it, and get a new one. Home Depot type stores have low cost ones

People, the darn thing doesn't work. So even if you put lemon rind down there, it's just going to clog it up. She knows she need a new one... Anything in liquid for or fine powder (baking soda) will do. As long as they dissolve with water.

Boiling water
Citrus fruits cut in half
ice cubes
if those don't work, then try bleach or vinegar
It may also be the rubber gasket, which you can pull out and scrub on both sides, or even just replace.

There are a lot of answers here that won't clean it. First, reach in there and see if you have something big rotitng in there that's not getting ground up. Then throw several handfulls of ice through it while it's running. Citrus crap will make it smell like stink mixed with citrus.
