I am sure it would help - if if was possible. My parents never had a car. My Father worked in the same place for 56 years. Always took a streetcar! We went to school and did most shopping on foot. I was 10 when I went shopping for my family of 6 - by myself! We didn't have a fridge

We built a world for "convienence" fueled by consumerism (which is "good for the economy"). At the same time we are exhausting the world's resources and killing our environment.

Nobody wants to go back. But if we keep going the way we are going now there definately won't be much of a future for our kids and grandkids.

But of course we can't hurt our ECONOMY!

Or can we??

NO==I take it you've never been to Japan on the SUPER train. You want a feeling of transit life. Its like standing up in the middle of a book of matches or being squished up like a can of sardines. I find a truck more to my likeing, Now if I have to visit my mother, she can't drive. But to walk to a train, about 60 miles for a 85 year old. Yes I agree the answer is no and global warming is'nt caused by exhaust. Water falls from aircraft, its ice when it hits the ground.

You obviously don't have a car or know someone that really likes theirs. There is no way such a demand would ever be obeyed by the car driving, freedom loving masses. I would love to hear how you would plan to get all the population of say New York (millions) where they want to go all at the same time. By the way what a drag it would be for the family to all take the bus to Grandmas house or on vacation.

Firstly the urban sprawl needs to stop, communities need to become smaller and your place of work should ideally be within walking distance or be on a good transportation route, same for schools and public facilities. Cars should be banned from inner city areas and higher taxes need to be imposed on motorists.

Heck just put me in charge of some tinpot country, let me suck it dry and then I'll retire to some island with hula girls (thank God it;s Friday, pardon my ranting lol. The above need to happen except maybe the las bit lol.

No way, what about the people who run late and they missed the bus or train, then have to wait for another one then really be late. What I think is everyone should be able to trade in their cars and get a government funded loan for a hybraid or electric car, with no interest, and regardless of credit. This way all good cars are on the road, not just good cars with gas hogs. And the payback should be based on people's net income, this way noone goes broke and we all help the enviroment and are able to drive nice cars.

I had this idea tooo...its brilliant. There are just a few complications involved, as people have pointed out. However, people seriously need to stop relying on cars and get used to public transportation. So what if you're late? C'est la vie.

No. Where would we go when we missed a bus, we'd always be following stupid schedules, and then the tracks could break down, and make everyone late. I don't like the idea, especially the part about taking away my freedom of a car.

Sure it would make sense as long as no one minded killing the entire worldwide economy for as long as it would take to complete your crackpot idea.

Yes, I would like that. Just keep around civic vehicles (police cars, fire trucks, work trucks, military vehicles, etc.). The occasional rental car experience wouldn't be bad either. But for the most part, cars suck.
