These fish are one of the more interesting fish you'll find. They are unusual because they are Labarynth Fish, named for the labarynth organ which allows them to breath oxygen from the atmosphere, not just the water. That's why they can be kept in such small containers.
They may be kept in most homes at room temperature.
When spawning the male creates a nest out of bubbles at the surface of the water. The female deposits eggs and the male firtilizes the eggs.
Males and females are dull and rather short finned in the wild. However, over many decades of selective breeding, the males have become some of the most colourful and "finny" fish you'll ever see. Females are still rather less colourful and shorter finned.
In the wilds of South East Asia you can still find these small fish in bodies of water as small as a puddle and as large as lakes and rivers.
These are the famed "Siamese Fighting Fish" and have gotten this name over many years of being used to bet on in contests of male against male fish. If these fish were lucky they'd be pulled apart before the shreaded each other fins and gills to the point of death. If you want to see this aggression .... just put a mirror up in front of a male. He will flair is gill covers and his finns and may even attack the image he sees in the mirror.
NEVER PLACE TWO MALES IN THE SAME SMALL TANK!
Most community fish tanks can hold one male and several females, ..... as long as the other fish do not pick on them.
Good luck on your project.

I have 5 male betta fish and 1 female, and I've noticed that the males always puff out at the female. They always try to fight over the female. They're pretty agressive, and they have a variety of colors in their scales, while the females are usually only brown or white.

Male bettas are bred by nurseries so there are variations in color and fin size and type. They are generally beautiful and highly aggressive to other males and to females who do not wish to mate. In nature they live in shallow streams. They do not require much room or water. They need free space to the top of their tank as they come uo to the top to get oxygen from the air. They make bubble nests, blowing lots of little bubbles to make a possible nest. The females are smaller and duller in color and don't have the big showy fins. They need water in the 75 degree area..They cost about $3- $4 each .Put in only one male per container! They have to be fed a small amount (REAALY SMALL) amount of food daily and the water has to be changed every few days. No pump or filter is really neede or even good for them. They like quiet water. It is a good way to introduce a young boy to be responsible for small living being and to watch it as he learns about science.

well, male Bettas are VERY aggressive. Mainly to fish that look like them; long fins or tails. E. G Angelfish. The female Betta is not as aggressive. Bettas like to live in small spaces; fish bowl.
