Yes, he can go back and file an amended return.

Did he file his own return or have it prepared by a service? Is he eligible due to having a qualified dependent or due to his income being low enough to qualify as a Single filer? There are several criteria that must be met as well. If he paid someone to prepare his return, he should go back to that office to discuss the error that was made. If he filed his own return, he can file an amended return to request the additional refund. However, he needs to make sure that he actually qualifies for the credit.

If he missed the EIC, sometimes the IRS will automatically catch it and send out a letter saying your refund has changed. If they do, all you have to do is sign the letter and send it back.
Or he can file an amended return.

This happened to me awhile back. I didn't realize at the time I qualified for the credit. IRS sent a notification letter about a change of refund amount. Sent it back, got my money.

Just file an amended return. 1040x. You will have to mail it in however. My suggestion would be to attach a copy of your original return.

He can file an ammended return using form 1040X. You can go to their website at http://www.irs.gov to order forms and get more information on the subject.
