Don't you think that our current social environment is truly a crux of values, technologies, morality, and ethics. We're poised to accomplish most anything that we could possibly wish to, yet we're so bogged down with our pop culture icons.
The common man and woman, doesn't realize where we are in our development. They don't see what we could accomplish as a whole, instead we're still squabbling over skin color, over the particulars of our individual urges, and our beliefs in a higher power.

I think my answer to your opening question can be most simply put: 'fear.' Fear of our true selves, fear of others. Fear of the 'unknown.' The root of conflict between individuals seems to boil down to fear, one of our most basic instincts. Fear is the reason we don't communicate with each other, not talking with each other disables our ability to know one another, not knowing one another flings open the doors to misunderstanding, doubt, suspicion and distrust, manifesting itself in conflict amongst people.
Wouldn't it be cool if all the leaders of the world had a pow wow and just talk with one another? They are adults. Why can't they just have a nice sit-down and talk things over before they start trying to blow each other up? Like temperamental toddlers, they 'act out' because they haven't acquired the mental capacity and language skills needed to rationalize and verbalize their frustrations and concerns through speech.
