The Klan and other white pride groups never left, however I feel there's a sudden surge of it due to various issues. The fact that we still have affirmative action, the illegal immigrants who usually can speak no to little English (and the fact that Spanish is becoming our second language), and all the 9/11 and post 9/11 with the Middle Eastern Islamic extremists. I think this combination is making many already prejudiced white people and young teens and adults feel even more outcasted.

I don't condone nor am I really defending these practices and ideals, but when someone feels oppressed or held back because of something they possibly can't help (such as skin color) than adverse reactions can occur.

I pray not. These people are really evil people that believe they are doing God's work. Boy does this quote sound familiar? The Klan started in Paris, Tennessee. I'm not proud since Memphis, Tenn. is were I was born & lived there most of my life. My neighbor was an F.B.I. Agent. On this particuar night, the kkk had planned a rally in a rough area of town. The agents wife & I begged to go. Finally with strict instrutions we had to keep a low-profile. I became ill when they spoke of going over on Lamar St. & to hang small children because of stolen bikes. They went into detail as how things are done between the brotherhood. They are nothing but ignorant thugs
My question is if they are doing a great service for the community, then why do they need a hood to cover their faces? The kkk planned a speak to recruit new members on Martin Luther King Birthday in Memphis. Friends for Martin Luther King had applied for a permit, what we did not know, they to had planned a march on the same day.All were told to stay behind the police barriers, since both were on seperate barriers across the street from each-other. It turned ugly soon. The kkk refused to conform to the rules and words of hate spilled over into the streets. Miraculously no one were killed. The kkk were led out of town & out of the county

The most recent figures indicate that membership in the klan is rising. That's not surprising. Historically, the sKlan numbers rise every time you have a wave of bigotry or racism direccted against some group. This happened in the 1920s when politicians and right-wing groups begand to agitate against immigrants from Eastern Europe and against blacks moving North to wrk in cities out from under the oppression of the "Jim Crow" laws. Klan numbers fell after that--until the 1950s-1960s when dthe civil rights movement stirred them up again.

Right now, we see a similar pattern to the 1920s. Right-wing groups are trying to create prejudice against the Muslim community in the UnitedStates with all sorts f false accusations (Note: there are 7 million muslims in th eUS--and no indication they are anything other than loyal Americans). In addition, thesesame groups are trying to create much the same kind of bigotry against Hispanics (and not just those who are here illegally).

And you will continue to see increases in this sort of thing among the fringes of the more extremeist right for some time (not the majority of conservatives, who don't share this attitude any more than any other decent person does). The liklihood of a major presidential campaign by both a woman and an African-American, combined with the unresolved war and unaddressed need for immigration reform make these fring elements feel threatened. I expect (thugh I hope I'm wrong about this) that we will see a good deal of violence targeting minorities of various kinds in the near future--both from the KKK and similar groups. That is the pattern they normally follow.

I strongly disagree with Celeste. You have to be one of them to think like that. The Klan never left, we have been preoccupied with the war and the aftermath of Katrina. We've also been obsessed with stupid s**t like Tyra Banks' weight. If illegal immigration is the best message to tell the Klan that nobody is originally from America and those were had the land stolen. So if there is a "comeback" of the klan so what? They have nothing better to do with themselves but hate other people.

Yes...this time they are against mexicans and latin americans...They will always find a way to come back...it's disgusting how people can convince themselves that they have more rights than other people just because of their nationality or skin color.
