There is a lot of information about this breed on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appaloosa
And you may get some good information from the breed societies too:

Appaloosa's are truely what you make of them. They are great all around horses, and just like any other breed there are good ones and bad ones. As far as color goes, make sure that you have great facilities for washing, because the smallest bit of mud will show up and stain them (like any horse with a lighter coat or a pattern). Right now my flea-bitten grey TB looks like she's twice as spotted as she's supposed to be, and it's a LOT of work to wash them thoroughly.
Overall, I would say the temperament of Appaloosas is better than some breeds, but it's a lot like the Quarter Horse and Paints temperaments. I've seen Appaloosa's win jumping classes at all the shows I ride in/work at, so I would say they should fit the bill, as long as they are bred for the purpose and have been trained to jump.

You never want to buy a horse because of color or breed. You can not generalize that much about a breed- Appaloosas can be good in all of those things- but it all depends on the horse. A stockier one would not be good at jumping. Most Apps I know are quiet but stubborn- but there are exceptions.
You are asking the wrong people- you need to bring a trainer out to see the horse- how does it respond to you? There is it's temperament. Colors- well, just look at the horse. Talents? What does the horse do? Apps are found in all disciplines, but one conformation of a horse is not necessarily good for another type of riding. As for jumping- does the individual horse have a willingness to jump? A clean form?
You need to look at the horse and ask these things. If you do not know, bring your trainer/instructor along.

Mine is a great jumper..........but also a bit of a butt head......whenever we go fox chasing we are the only ones with an appy and everyone tells us "that's an appaloosa.....the Indians used to ride them"
It doesn't matter what color they are, the color of the one you are looking at won't change.......
On thing is that appys are susceptible to E.R.U. or moon blindness a disease that attacks the eyes.........Don't buy this one if the person said it has this disease.........
Really breed doesn't matter......this is because it is so hard to make generalizations........yes most thoroughbreds are hot tempered.......but yet again some aren't ......and although quarter horses are supposed to be calm, there are some that are crazy.......
don't base your decision on breed or color, base it on that individuals temperament, height, and training.........you will be much more likely to end up with the right horse

Try and focus on your horsemanship goals and the horses personality- not his breed. Otherwise you may pass up a horse that would be great for you all because he wasn't the breed you wanted.
Every horse has a different personality and different abilities. Anyone could sit here and say that Appy's are the way to go...but that doesn't mean that the first 10 Appaloosas you go to look at will be great horses- or even more important....the right horse for you.
I suggest that you get with your vet and trainer and discuss what type of horse you are looking for. Leave out breed, color, and age. They will help you look for and find a perfect equine for you.

Apps are a good breed. I have heard that they are very sure footed and have great feet. something i have have noticed is that they dont really have much of a mane. There is soo many colors that they can be. I think an app would be the perfect horse to get and 13 is a great age.

I would go for a paint or a throughobred. They are the best tempered and the most athletic.
