It depends on what you mean, a computer has two types of memory, ram and hard drive. Ram is basically short term memory, and will speed up your computer; hard drive is storage capacity.
Either way, since you are asking this question, you don't have the knowledge neccessary to upgrade by yourself. Take your computer in to a professional and they will help you out.

You can go to www.crucial.com and many other places to find out which chipsets are for your computer. All you have to do to install the memory cards is to open the case of your computer and locate your memory slots. You do have to know how much memory your computer can hold. Using my Compaq for an example, it came with 256 megabytes of Ram (random access memory). It can hold 1 gigabyte of memory. It had two 128 megabyte chips in it. I got ahold of two 256 megabyte chips and I took the old chips out (make sure you always ground yourself by touching the metal chassis of your computer when uninstalling and installing chips). I replaced the chips with the 256 megabyte chips making my memory be 512 megabytes.
You can also add cache memory too, but I didn't do that; just the memory. You can also get a larger capacity hard drive because when your computer is running out of memory resources, it will use the free space on your hard drive as a virtual memory and that tricks the computer into thinking it has more ram than it actually does.

If you're running win 98, then probalby 96 mgs is all it will manage (if that much). If you are running XP, take a look at your motherboard spec sheet and see how much ram the computer can take.
If you don't have the motherboard sheet, go on line and go to your computer mfg site and you should get specifics there. Many times you can type in your serial number and it will tell you exactly what you have and what you need. Ram is easy to install - not a problem - BUT......... it has to be the right kind of ram - so you have to research what your computer takes.
Then it's simply sticking it in the empty memory slot and you're off and running. Again, you can always get a copy of the motherboard specs from your mfg. site. (so you can see where the memory slots are- if you're unfamiliar.

Find out what type of memory your computer takes by consulting your manual or the internet, and go to an electronics store and buy some and install it.
