I am not sure when it was written, but it was a old book when I read it in high school 20 years ago. It was about a retarded guy who either had an opperation, or took some kind of medicine that made him very smart, but he knew it was only a temporary thing and he would soon be like he was before. All I remember about the title of it was that it was his name with one of the letters backward. I would really like to read it again.

All the above are correct; it is Flowers For Algernon, and it is a FANTASTIC book. I recently rediscovered it myself.

If you liked that, you should also read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" by Mark Haddon. It's no Algernon, but it's a quick read along the same lines and I enjoyed it.
