You could use a blue light bulb or some blue plastic under the light to get the same effect without the risk of food coloring. Be careful not to start a fire with the blue plastic though :)

Food coloring can be poisonous for fish.If you want a certain color effect, use a special light bulb made for the aquarium lamp. There is alcohol in food coloring which kills fish. After a few hours the color may fade beause the filter will remove it,but the alcohol will remain. You could use some colored foil, available in pet sores,to give the effect of blue color. There are also colored sleeves that go over the light bulbs sold in pet supply stores.

Have you accidentally gotten food coloring on your fingers? It dyes them. Are you trying to dye your water or your fish, because it will dye your fish blue too. There doesn't seem to be any data on whether it is safe to put food coloring in aquariums. Food coloring is safe for humans' consumption, but then we are bigger. If we take two aspirin, our headache goes away. If we give two aspirin to a newborn baby, it could kill the baby because they are so small. So, even if the dye is not harmful to us, you can't know whether it would be to such a small animal as a fish. Is it really worth taking the chance of killing your fish to have blue water? There are lighting systems out there that can make the water appear to be a beautiful blue. Try those instead.

sounds unhealthy. The filter would remove it I bet.
Get some lighting gels from a local lighting or night club supply store. They're flame-proof plastic sheets to put over spotlights. you can slip them under the lights to color the water.
