I'm Hispanic (MEXICAN) and i live in a town where everyone is mostly white. And since what i've seen since i moved here i see that most all hispanics are alittle darker for some reason but the thing is i'm not. when i was in my last year of school i would hang out with hispanics and people would question WHY....every time i would be with one of them they would make fun of them but NOT me. WELL my POINT is that i do think that people DO JUGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER because they WOULDN'T make fun of me because they thought i was one of THEM..

I am not speaking for everyone, but, I know that every (and I do mean every) person that have talked to lately is just really tired of the Spanish speaking immigrant. Sadly, the spanish speaking immigrant 'book' has a very specific 'cover' for the most part. I have really noticed a rise in contempt for illegal immigrants that refuse to learn the American language. I am not saying that I condone this, but it is a fact. Unfortunatley, people see a 'Mexican' person and make the assumption that they are an illegal immigrant. Therefore, acting the way they do. You don't fit the bill when it comes to 'looking' Mexican, therefore you are passed over.
The fact of life is that people DO judge. It is human nature. You can tone it down but you can not stop it completely. I have many hispanic friends that speak perfect English (one of which came here when she was 16 and forced herself to learn it to fit in) who are really angry with the people who refuse to speak the national language. They say that those hispanics are making it really hard on them. I feel badly for you for having to put up with it, but there is a group of people who have pushed a lot of Americans in a corner and Americans are starting to strike back. There is no way to stop that aside from refusing to accept Spanish as an acceptable language here.
I hope the people doing this around you grow up and stop harrassing your friends because of what one group is doing. I don't know that there is much you can do. I would think that being confrontational with someone who is already obviously harboring hateful feelings like that would not be a good idea. You don't know how far they would go to get there point across.
I wish the best of luck to you.

I love Latinos, most of my boyfriends have been Latin. I think they have a beautiful culture. I find the men to be very attractive. Latin people tend to be very kind people and the women are very nurturing. Latinos usually are down to earth and easy to get along with. They don't usually come off as arrogant. They know how to have a good time and party. I love going to family gatherings with my boyfriend because they are so much fun, much like a black reunion except the food is different. To me Latin families are a lot like Black families as far as the closeness and bond that they share and the way that people interact. That is why I feel so comfortable around them, because they know how to treat people. I think it is a shame the way people mistreat Hispanic people especially the ones that aren't American born. They assume that every person is illegal and treat them rudely. We have a very large Latin population in my area, and I notice that here they almost expect people be rude to them. I go out of my way to be nice. My Spanish is not great, but I know enough to get by so I try to have conversations with the ladies around here. I get the sense that they really appreciate being treated like an equal instead of everyone treating them like s.hit. It truly pisses me off to see anyone unjustly mistreated. But some people are ignorant and they judge people before they give them a chance. People like that, you shouldn't care what they think about you.

Edit:
I must add this to dispel the common assumption that Hispanic people refuse to learn English. Every Hispanic immigrant that I have known (and I have know quite a few living in Texas) really and truly wants to and tries to learn English. English is the hardest language to learn, mostly because it has origins in every other language and has so many conflicting rules. In my town they have free ESL lessons and if you drive through that parking lot it is filled with cars. These people are going at night after work for two hours a night trying to learn English. My boyfriend's mom has been here for 24 years and she still has a very hard time. She is an American citizen, and she speaks English but it is choppy and a lot of words she still doesn't know. When they learn English they learn common words that are used often so a person that uses big words will confuse them. Also to them, we talk fast, so it is harder to keep up with a conversation. I think some people need to have some empathy and start looking at the world through other people's eyes.

No problems here. Latinos are ok with me. It's not in me to dislike people just because of their skin color.
