Leonard Cohen wrote it. Jeff Buckley made it popular but Rufus Wainwright's the one singing it in the movie. I really thought it was Jeff Buckley in the movie but I was wong.

A lot of people ask about that song, I've answered it several times.
It was written by Cohen, first as a poem. He later added more verses, changed it a bit.

on the shrek credits, wait like 8 mminutes for the music credits, and it should say "written by"
