Your Wrong. People think that being a meteorologist is really easy which in fact is not true. I think Meteorology is really hard compared to Geology, Chemistry, Physics and Calculus. If you really were sat down and taught all the concepts of the weather and why everything happens, you would think the instructor is crazy. Predicting the weather is another hard task that meteorologist have to come to a conclusion on before putting it on the tv. Meteorologists dont get paid 100,000-150,000 a year for nothing.

Here is my two cents worth of thought on this topic. Over the past decade, the weather forecasting world has seen a big shift as computers models have improved to the point where they are getting more harder to beat. The forecasting business is shifting more towards a computer based forecast with little to no human input for the general daily written forecasts.

In most winters, we tend to have a much more progressive weather pattern. These last 2 years, we have seen a tendency of being in much longer periods of strongly amplified upper flow pattern. This will result in much less progressive change in the weather with longer periods of extreme or out of the ordinary weather patterns.

When you have such an unusual weather pattern, the computer models try to break down these amplified weather patterns too quickly. Models depend much more on climatology with time. This is done as a safe guard of preventing one bad variable inputted into the equation that can cause extreme forecast data errors to develop with time .

With computers having a much stronger influence these days in the forecasting world, when we do have such a long term unusual hemispheric weather pattern, the error rate of the daily forecasts will be much higher. I think one way to try to correct this situation is to have the human factor adjusted to a higher level until we are more confident with the improving computer generated forecast models. With experience, forecasters can recognize the weakness of each model with each situation and adjust the forecast of the computer generated solution.
