as young as seven... if it is in a legal process, you can even appear in court hearings to ask for the child's decision if both parents or party wouldn't compromise and couldn't decide where the child belong.
but personally, i think there is no legal or proper age in deciding which party would the child be in custody of, admit it or not things still wouldn't be the same it's not the decision that is painful for the child to bare, but its the process of accepting the fact that his/her parents is separated, and as years past there are certain stage in his life where he would really need the presence of a mother and a father figure in order for him to grow and mature as a complete person.

In California there is no "set" age however the minor has to go before the judge and explain WHY they want to switch the parents will also be given their chance to speak. Then the judge will make a decision based upon what is best for the child and not simply what the child WANTS. In otherwords you don't get to switch households just because you don't like the rules.

age isn't the issue here. it is level of maturity and understanding. the judge will decide if your mature enough or understand what is happening to the full extent. then again he will allow you to state your preference, evaluate the situation. then he decides on what would be in your best interest while taking your preference into consideration.
