I want a new laptop, and Gateway now offers Vista Home OR XP Media Center. Since I want to use more of my hard drive and don't want to adopt Vista this early in the game and I won't be buying a system that can support Aero effectively, shouldn't I opt for XP instead? What do you think?

I have both on a dual boot & fiind myself going back to XP Media Center more & more often. I've had Vista Ultimate (release to manufacturers) since last November.

Many of my XP apps won't work in Vista & I do not like how it tries to control copyrighted media. Just don't see any true advantage other than a new search engine & a pretty face .... just bells & whistles.

The Firewall is a pain to modify & security weaknesses have been exposed. Too busy ... everything is a song & dance.

XP support will still be here for a few more years.
Unless you are a person influenced by "having the latest" & trends .... don't go Vista.
Trust me ... I've used them both & keep Vista only as a curiosity.

My prefered OS is XP Pro Media Center Edition. I once was Vista's biggest fan (check my answer's history) but now have learned better.

Get the Window XP media center now and upgrade to Vista later. Your system can't effective support the new Aero interface and Vista still has lots of incompability problems with hardware and software.

Yeah I'm a Senior Technician for a network consulting firm, I got Vista Ultimate to keep on top of things, and I have been really impressed. It is the best windows operating system on release ever, I have had very few problems what I have had have been very easy to remedy, and have resulted from either third party software (had a small issue getting Daemon tools installed), very new software/hardware (Vista didn't load the latest driver for my 8800GTX). or very old software/hardware (Vista didn't load drivers for my old Audigy MP3+). All in all its very smooth and well done, I don't see that many problems therefore that many reasons to opt for XP. Alot of people are thinking of XP when they recommend XP, Xp was buggy SP1 made alot of improvements, and SP2 even more, I really feel Vista is better than XP right out of the gate.

initially you do no longer choose something Vista in case you have not got Vista yet, secondly, once you improve to Vista you will no longer have any choose for Media version any further, thirdly, Vista residing house Premuim and Vista ideal the two have the Media middle function onboard natively. So, do no longer trouble, you're lined. while you're preparing for the Vista improve, bypass to the Vista Readiness website and run the Vista Readiness gadget. it rather is user-friendly to apply and provides comphrehensive records on your device compatability and what if something you may exchange or get rid of with the intention to enhance whilst it comes time. bear in concepts, purely the OEMs could have Vista whilst it first comes out, it heavily isn't till the middle area of this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days in the previous Microsoft will make Vista available for individual customer purchase. properly, busnesses get it too. So, in case you may purchase any application now, merely be certain it says it rather is Vista properly matched, then you rather are lined. do no longer purchase something that may no longer Vista compatable, nonetheless manufacturers are affirming they could have updates in time for whilst Vista is out for us customer consumers to enhance.

Dont go with Vista yet....In a few months a surprise will come in for it and Im sure you wont want to start installing updates so quick. Go with XP and like someone said upgrade to Vista in about 6 months.

Get it set up for Vista but get XP media center. There's just too much 'crap' yet that has to be done for vista to really run the way it's supposed to. I need a new computer too - but I'm waiting another year.

It's tempting, I know - but there's a lot of problems right now - so I guess it all depends on how patient you want to be.

NOTE: I see there are a lot of opinions here...... so I guess it's really a personal choice. I am a computer person - I would wait..... most geeky people do - unless their beta testers.... wait for SP-2.

I recommend getting Vista. I just got a new computer and Vista runs perfectly. I haven't noticed any problems besides not running certain videos, but that also happens with XP.

Strongly suggest Vista.
