my sister-in-law had my first nephew in september. Anyway, today, on the phone *since she now lives in NC*, she said that Andrew has to get bigger bibs cuz his neck is so big. And that he hasn't been able to keep his formula down. (That part has been going on since like December. She said he's gaining weight, but can't keep his formula down. He weighs 16 pounds now. I think she's got Munchausen by Proxy. She said the doctors are stumped. They don't know what is wrong with Andrew.

I think 16 pounds sounds like an ok weight, depending on how big he was when he was born.

Some babies just spit up a lot, and there is nothing you can do about it. As long as Andrew is not upset by it, and he is gaining weight at a rate that the dr is ok with, there is nothing to worry about. Spitting up a lot tends to resolve itself once the baby is eating solid foods and sitting up by himself.

There are a couple of things your sister can try - switching formulas (possibly he has a dairy sensitivity), keeping him upright for 20-30 minutes after eating, feeding him smaller amounts (6 ounces at a time) more frequently.

My niece was born at the beginning of August and went to the doctor's today for her six month wellness check. She weighs 15 1/2 pounds (50th percentile and she's a month older than your nephew). So, I don't think the weight is a problem.

Spitting up formula is very common with infants. As a matter of fact they can still get their nutrition while spitting up. Definately talk to your doctor, but usually they outgrow it when they start sitting up (my son and my neice both did). I even started adding a bit of rice cereal to my son's milk a tip from my pedetrician and it worked. It helped him keep it down.

Every mom worries about their kids. It's easy to obsess over them especially if you are so far from your family. And, feel alone and unsure what to do.

If she feels something is wrong she needs to get a second opinon.

He is probably keeping enough formula down, but just spitting up a lot. Many babies spit up very large amounts of formula. I had three who did that.

At 5 months old and 16# he is at the high end, but that doesn't seem abnormal to me. If the doctor isn't concerned I wouldn't worry too much.

My daughter did the same thing and her doctor told me that it might be the brand formula so I went from Enfamil to Good Start and come to find out it wasn't only just that but we had to change her over to soy formula and she was able to keep it down.
