i noticed that my algae eater had a red scar on it's belly a little less than half a centimeter. Could this be from fighting or could he be sick?

1) Look to see of there is anything sharp/pointed that he could have scraped against in the tank.

2) By algae eater, do you mean pleco? Do you have more than one of these, or any other kind of catfish? Plecos and other cats have sharp spines in their dorsal and pectoral fins, so he may have gotten too close to another fish and gotten scratched - something for fishkeepers to be careful of as well when keeping these species! If this is the case, you should make sure you have an appropriately sized tank for the size, number, and activity level of the fish so they don't constantly run into one another.

maybe if you have a sharp stone or something in your fish tank maybe it scraped it self. Most fish don't attack tank cleaners so I'm not sure. Is your algea eater a dark brownish/blacking flatish type. you should treat it in case it gets a fungus there. There are some off the counter stuff for fish
